October SurpriseDuring the 1980 presidential race between President Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, Bush Sr. (Reagan’s running mate and CIA director during the Ford administration) and William Casey (Reagan’s campaign chief and later CIA director) held secret meetings with mullahs of Iran. Bush and Casey negotiated a delay in the release of 52 American hostages, who otherwise would have been released in October, until after the election. (The “surprise” was that the hostages where not released in October.) Long version (pdf)“... saying that Israel and the United States are united by a shared terrorist threat has the causal relationship backwards: rather, the United States has a terrorism problem in good part because it is so closely allied with Israel, not the other way around.”
“... the mere existence of the Lobby suggests that unconditional support for Israel is not in the American national interest. If it was, one would not need an organized special interest group to bring it about. But because Israel is a strategic and moral liability, it takes relentless political pressure to keep U.S. support intact.”
Interview“The Israel lobby and its influence has been a taboo subject for too long. It is very important for the national interest that this matter be discussed at length and in a serious way in the media and on Capitol Hill. Good NewsOil is a vital commodity, but there is no oil crisis and any alleged dearth of oil is not a legitimate foreign policy issue. Even were there an oil crisis, there is nuclear power and who knows what other technical innovations that could flourish in a county free from crazy regulations and confiscatory taxation.
The Key to the Energy Crisisby Lindsay Williams. At a Ford Hall Forum lecture question period in 1976, when oil prices were record high, Ayn Rand said “I don’t believe there is an energy crisis.” This book presents evidence that the oil crisis of the 1970’s was manufactured by elements within the government. There is vastly more oil under Alaska’s North Slope than all of Saudi Arabia.
The Oil Reserve Fallacyby Prof. Robert Kovarik.
“Proven reserves are not a measure of future supply.”
“... the Middle East does not have two thirds of the world’s oil reserves.”
The two thirds estimate refers “to a narrow category of ‘proven’ oil reserves, not to ‘every ... barrel of oil in the world’ ... .”
“According to a US Geological Survey report quietly published in 2000, there is more oil outside the Middle East than inside the region.” Saudi Arabia, to take one country, “may have one quarter of the world’s identified oil reserves ..., but it has only about 16 percent of all ultimately recoverable reserves ... .”
Abiotic Oil ?I was brought up on the idea that oil came from prehistoric plants, “fossil fuel” you know, and that therefore the amount of oil underneath the earth is necessarily very limited. But the notion that oil comes from prehistoric vegetation is largely conjecture, and it has competition. Some Russians maintain that oil is produced by an ongoing abiotic process, a process not involving living things, and at a rate that even today exceeds consumption. Apparently they have some good evidence.
